BCCA Statement on Breakdown of Canada & US Trade Negotiations

Stalled trade negotiations create more uncertainty for BC Construction

BCCA supports a coordinated Team Canada approach to the ongoing trade relationship with the United States. Protecting Canadian workers, businesses, and our economy while continuing to pursue a constructive path toward fair and reliable trade. We appreciate the leadership of the federal government through this period of uncertainty, as well as BC’s support for a unified national response and the focus on strengthening and diversifying British Columbia’s economy.

There is no question that this continuing trade dispute creates real challenges for construction. Tariffs and counter-tariffs increase costs, complicate supply chains, and create uncertainty for contractors, owners, and the communities counting on new housing and infrastructure. This in a time when we must build resiliency and new market access through major infrastructure investments. It is therefore imperative that any counter-tariffs take these factors into account, given how critical a time it is to build resiliency and new market access through major infrastructure investments.

At the same time, Canada must stand up for fair and reliable trade. We support the federal government’s efforts to protect Canadian workers and businesses while continuing to pursue a constructive path forward with our largest trading partner.

For construction, the path ahead should also be about building Canadian capacity, improving productivity, strengthening domestic supply chains, diversifying markets, and accelerating the infrastructure our economy needs. Government and industry will need to work closely together to manage the immediate impacts of tariffs while keeping projects moving.

This is a challenging moment, but it is also an opportunity to strengthen Canada’s economy for the long term. Our industry is ready to be part of that work.
