LNG CANADA Invest in BC and Canada: A Generational Milestone Achieved
BCCA and the Regional Construction Associations are very pleased that LNG Canada has made a positive final investment decision. BCCA has been working with LNG Canada for several years to build capacity in our province’s skilled workforce, and we have seen firsthand their commitment to BC’s communities and tradespeople. LNG Canada has proven to be a respectful and visionary partner: this is a great milestone for BC and for Canada.
Nothing gets built without skilled tradespeople. At $40 billion this is the largest private sector investment in the history of Canada: a 53% increase in BC’s current project value – from $75BN to $115BN overnight. The LNG Canada facility is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for BC contractors and our construction workforce, but in order for that potential to be realized industry and government must work hand in hand.
SKILLED WORKFORCE
The new LNG Canada facility in Kitimat will need 10,000 skilled tradespeople at peak construction. LNG Canada has set a target of 25% apprentices – that’s 2,500 apprentices.
This is an exciting opportunity, yet one that applies further pressure to a historically tight construction labour market in BC.
The skilled worker shortage for our sector was already estimated at 11,700. The impact of the LNG Canada project on this projection has yet to be determined but we believe it will increase the challenge on contractors to find and keep skilled workers.
At this milestone moment for our province and our sector, we must recognize that success will require industry and government to work shoulder to shoulder in a mindset of productive, strategic collaboration.

PROCUREMENT
The LNG Canada project is an exciting opportunity for BC’s construction contractors. BCCA and the Regional Construction Associations look forward to supporting JGC-Fluor as the procurement contractor for LNG Canada to ensure broad access to project opportunity information for all local contractors along the pipeline route, and across British Columbia.
This is an important milestone: BC contractors look forward to building BC’s future.
