With so many BC construction business owners nearing retirement, and few companies equipped with a formal transition plan, succession planning in BC’s construction industry is becoming increasingly urgent. Leaders need clear options, practical tools, and guidance to protect the stability and culture they’ve worked hard to build.

The BCCA Succession Planning Toolkit delivers exactly that. This resource features four employee ownership models that serve different organizational goals and legacy plans for business owners. The information provided is intended to start the conversation to help your business and the industry remain strong and resilient. We’re proud to provide this free resource to help you assess your options, strengthen leadership, and prepare your business and your people for a successful transition. The tools below include educational Information resources and employee ownership tools in the form of organization assessment calculators to help you navigate your business future.

About the Project Team

The Succession Planning Toolkit was created by Equinova Management Consultants, as a capstone project for the University of Victoria’s MBA program to address employee recruitment, retention, and succession planning for small and medium-sized businesses in the construction industry. Through industry engagement, member surveys, literature review, and financial modeling, the project team examined both the barriers and opportunities associated with Employee Ownership transitions. Their primary finding was clear: employee ownership can meaningfully strengthen organizational resilience, improve employee retention, and support sustainable succession. This project is the result of their efforts.

This project was delivered by the Equinova Management MBA consulting team - William Chong, Geoffrey Ewert, Christy Kerr, and Catherine Lawton - who contributed expertise in project management, research, financial modeling, and knowledge translation. Strategic guidance and industry insights were provided by Chris Atchison (CEO, BCCA) and Lesley Patten (COO, BCCA), with academic oversight from Cheryl Mitchell, MBA Academic Director at the University of Victoria.
